In 1931 the Latvian Writers and Journalist Association had submitted to the Postal Administration a request to issue a set of stamps commemorating Latvian patriotic writers and educators of the :National Awakening Period:. This was the time in the second half of the 19th Century, when the Latvian literature had its beginning, the Latvian language grammar was documented, and the Latvian patriotism found its expression in all fields of culture. The Latvian Postal Administration accepted this request only five years later, and issued on January 4th, 1936 a set of four stamps without surcharge. The Government Printing Office charged the Post Office 745.76 Lats for the printing.
The stamps were valid for postage until August 31st, 1940. Some nice archival variants.
