On various dates in 1940, shortly before the Soviets occupied Latvia, a set of 11 identical simplified coat of arms design stamps were issued.  They were probably intended to gradually replace the old design, after it had been in use some 18 years.  The Santimi stamps have no currency designation, but only Lat stamp has the designation LATS.  The stamps were valid for postage until April 20th, 1941; thereafter only USSR stamps were valid.  Despite the short time, they were widely used.
